Any student, part-time or full-time, enrolled in a postgraduate degree by research, who can show evidence that they have had an academic work either printed or unequivocally accepted for publication before either the due date of submission of their thesis or the actual submission of their thesis (whichever is the earlier) will receive a grant from the School of: • $500 for a first publication • $250 for any succeeding publication. The aim of the grant is to reward excellent research, to encourage postgraduates to publish during, or as soon as possible after, their candidature, and to support their further research work. The School defines an ‘academic work’ as any publication that may be submitted as an item counting as at least one point in the annual DEST publications audit. The main categories then are: academic monographs published by an academic or good commercial publisher; articles published in a fully refereed academic journal (hard copy or web-based); book chapters in collections published by an academic or good commercial publisher. If in doubt, consult the Deputy Head of School (Postgraduate Studies). Proof of publication or unequivocal acceptance for publication must be presented to the Deputy Head of School (Postgraduate Studies) before the award can be claimed. Acceptable proofs would include: • a photocopy of the relevant title page(s) and publication details • a letter or an email from an editor stating unequivocally that the work has been accepted for publication. On approval of the Deputy Head of School (Postgraduate Studies) the School Administration Officer will organise payment of the grant. It will normally be expected that six months after the award of the grant, the grantee will submit a half-page report to the Deputy Head of School (Postgraduate Studies) outlining how the grant was used to support their research. |
