Publications Grant

Any student, part-time or full-time, enrolled in a postgraduate degree by research, who can show evidence that they have had an academic work either printed or unequivocally accepted for publication before either the due date of submission of their thesis or the actual submission of their thesis (whichever is the earlier) will receive a grant from the School of:

• $500 for a first publication

• $250 for any succeeding publication.

The aim of the grant is to reward excellent research, to encourage postgraduates to publish during, or as soon as possible after, their candidature, and to support their further research work.

The School defines an ‘academic work’ as any publication that may be submitted as an item counting as at least one point in the annual DIISR publications audit. The main categories then are: academic monographs published by an academic or good commercial publisher (A1); articles published in a fully refereed academic journal (hard copy or web-based) (C1); book chapters in collections published by an academic or good commercial publisher (B1). If in doubt, consult the Postgraduate Co-ordinator. All publications should have a UWA by-line.

Please complete an application form and proof of publication or unequivocal acceptance for publication must be presented to the Postgraduate Co-ordinator before the award can be claimed. Acceptable proofs would include:

• listing on the annual School publications audit;

a photocopy of the relevant title page(s) and publication details

• a letter or an email from an editor stating unequivocally that the work has been accepted for publication within two years.

On approval of the Postgraduate Co-ordinator, the School Administration Officer will arrange payment of the grant. If not already done so, graduates receiving this award MUST submit their published work to the annual publications audit. It will normally be expected that six months after the award of the grant, the grantee will submit a half-page report to the Postgraduate Co-ordinator outlining how the grant was used to support their research.

In the event of a student subsequently receiving a Dean's Postgraduate Award the publications grant received from the School must be remunerated.
