War, neutrality and welfare: a political history of (unemployment) social policy formulation at times of war in Germany and the Netherlands, 1914-1927

My research studies the impact of the First World War on state unemployment policy in the Netherlands, a neutral country that nevertheless mobilised for war, and Germany, a belligerent.

Why my research is important

The study builds on scholarly work about the expansion of state intervention in social and economic areas and the private lives of citizens as a result of the First World War. The War and its aftermath were significant catalysts towards the development of the modern welfare state.
