James Connolly and Modern Irish Republicanism

James Connolly is revered among Irish republicans. He is part of republicanism's pantheon of martyrs and he is also one of their most frequently quoted theorists. In many ways however this is an anomoly. James Connolly viewed himself as a revolutionary Marxist. An insight is therefore offered into republican discourse by analysing the competing republican interpretations of Connolly.

Why my research is important

Republicanism is an enduring feature of the Irish political scene. In the context of the European economic crisis, as Connolly is invoked more and more in Ireland, by republicans, radicals and socialists, seeking a deeper understanding of republicanism is of particular importance.
